BDV

A blowdown valve is used to relieve pressure from within a vessel or length of pipe. It may be an automated valve, such as those used in liquid sumps or steam traps to clear condensate and precipitate. It may also be a manual valve, such as a metal seated ball valve for blowing down a steam line prior to entry or maintenance.

Consideration must be used when operating a blow down valve as a fast opening valve may release a tremendous amount of energy to the environment. Care should also be taken when designing a system with blow downs to direct the energy to a location where safety is not compromised.
