Operation

Coriolis meters operate on the fundamental assumption that the density of the fluid does not change within the tubes and that the density is the same in both tubes.

Installation Orientation

Micro Motion for gas service

Gas & Vapor

When installing a coriolis meter in gas service, it is important to orient the meter so that any liquid carryover or liquid slugs quickly passes through the meter. The preferred flow/installation direction for this meter is in the flag position with flow down. It is acceptable to install the meter with the tubes facing up. This prevents liquid from pooling in the tubes in the event there is a slug of liquids.

Liquids

It is not recommended to install the meter with the tubes in the horizontal position. In the event there is stratified flow due to the separation or oil and water, the density on the top tube will be different from the density of the bottom tube and the readings will not be correct.

If there is the possibility of gas breakout due to pressure drop or gas carry under, it is preferred to push the gas slug through the tubes as quickly as possible. It is preferred to install the meter in the flag position with flow going up. It is equally acceptable to install the tubes. However, if there are solids in the fluid, the velocity through the tubes must be high enough to keep the tubes clean. Otherwise, plugging may result.
