When any employee, contractor or volunteer drives a motor vehicle as a part of his job, the driving should always be done in a legally and socially responsible manner, making every reasonable effort to avoid an accident. This responsibility includes the following (but is not limited to):
- Provide the same professional attention to driving as would be expected in any other portion of the job.
- Drive defensively to avoid any accident to the extent that it is reasonably practical to do so.
- Obey all speed limits. Most operators have a maximum posted speed limit. Remember the speed limits are maximum speed limits. It is important to never drive faster than conditions allow.
- Obey all other traffic laws.
- Seat belts shall be worn by driver and all passengers any time the vehicle is in motion.
- Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Always park vehicle in a proper location to avoid contributing to an accident. Many companies operate with a 'first move forward' philosophy.
- Assure that any significant safety defects in the vehicle are corrected at the earliest practical time.
- Do not operate a vehicle, machine or any equipment that you are not specifically trained to operate. If necessary, make sure you have the necessary licenses and certifications required to operate the equipment.
Every company has their own policies, and it is important that every operator is familiar with these policies.
