About

Farmersburg Mine, a surface operation in Vigo and Sullivan Counties in Indiana, shipped 3.3 million tons of medium sulfur coal in 2008.

Opened in 1996, the mine has steadily increased coal production and employment. Its workforce of 260 currently operates the mine on two shifts per day, seven days a week, year round. The team uses a combination of dragline, truck/shovel and tractor push to remove overburden and uncover coal in the Indiana No. 7 and No. 6 seams. The coal is hauled from the pit by truck to the preparation plant for crushing, processing and blending before being transported by train to multiple utilities.

The Farmersburg team is among the safest in the industry. The mine was honored by the U.S. Department of Labor with the Sentinels of Safety Award as the safest surface mine in the United States in 2006. Farmersburg employees have also earned Peabody President's Award for safety excellence in 2006 and 2008; the mine reported a perfect record of zero incidents in each year.

The mine has received numerous awards for stewardship and sustainability. In 2005, the U.S. Department of the Interior awarded the Farmersburg team the Bronze Good Neighbor Award for an extraordinary commitment to industry education and outreach activities. Activities include independent study, technology transfer with government agencies and a history of conducting educational field days to share best practices for growing productive cropland with a variety of stakeholders. About 2,500 acres have been reclaimed for agricultural use. In 2004, U.S. Interior also recognized Farmersburg Mine with a National Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Award for the restoration of prime farmland.

Farmersburg Mine is a Peabody Energy operation. St. Louis-based Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2008 sales of 255 million tons and $6.6 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and 2 percent of worldwide electricity. [1]
