A weld with full penetration is one in which there is a complete penetration and fusion of weld and parent metal throughout the thickness of the joint. A full penetration weld ensures a fully welded interface between the two parts and is generally the strongest joint.
With a full strength, full penetration weld, the base metal strength is considered the same across the weld joint. Full penetration welds are stronger than partial penetration welds.
