(SW) A socket weld connection is a method of joining pipe or fittings using welding. Like beveled end fittings, a socket weld fitting is a welded connection. Unlike the beveled end connections, a socket weld uses a single fillet weld weld instead of a buttweld.

When assembling pipe with socket-weld fittings, the pipe is inserted into the fitting before welding. The pipe is not welded when the pipe is flush with the rear of the socket. The welder must include a 1/16" gap between the pipe and the bottom of the socket. This prevents the weld from cracking due to forces induced from thermal expansion of the pipe.
