About

The Watts Bar Nuclear Plant is located on the Tennessee River. The site covers 1,700 acres. Unit 1 is the only reactor in service at the plant. In 1988, construction was halted on unit 2 because of a projected reduction in electricity demand. Recently, however, TVA announced plans to complete construction of unit 2. More information on this unit is available in Status of New Potential Commercial Reactors in the United States. [1]

TVA’s third nuclear power plant, Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, is located on 1,700 acres on the northern end of Chickamauga Reservoir, in east Tennessee. The plant was named for a sandbar at Watts Island that hampered navigation on the Tennessee River until it was flooded by Watts Bar Reservoir. [2]
