Motor Horsepower

on . Posted in Motor

Motor horsepower, abbreviated as \(MHP\), is the power output of an electric motor, and it is a unit of measurement that quantifies the rate at which the motor can perform work.  One horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts.  The concept of horsepower is often used to describe the power of engines, particularly in the context of automobiles, industrial machinery, and electric motors.  It provides a standardized way to express the capability of a motor or engine to do work.

For example, if you have an electric motor with a power rating of 1 horsepower, it means that the motor can exert enough force to lift 550 pounds one foot in one second, or an equivalent amount of work in a different scenario.  It's important to note that the efficiency of a motor can affect its actual performance, so the rated horsepower might not always directly translate to the effective output in practical applications.  Motors are often designed and rated with a certain safety margin to ensure reliable and efficient operation under various conditions.

Motor Horsepower (Direct Current) formula

\( MHP =  V \; I \; \eta_m \;/\; 746 \)     (Motor Horsepower Direct Current)

\( V =  MHP \; 746 \;/\; I \; \eta_m \)

\( I =  MHP \; 746 \;/\; V \; \eta_m \)

\( \eta_m =  MHP \; 746 \;/\; V \; I \)

Symbol English Metric
\( MHP \) = motor horsepower \(lbf-ft\;/\;sec\) \(J\;/\;s\)
\( V \) = voltage \( V \) \(kg-m^2\;/\;s^3-A\)
\( I \) = current \( A \) \(C\;/\;s\)
\( \eta_m \)  (Greek symbol eta) = motor efficiency \( dimensionless \)

Motor Horsepower Formulas

\(V\) = Voltage  -  \(I\) = Amps  -  \(PF\) = Power Factor  -  \(\eta\) = Efficiency  -  \(HP\) = Horsepower

To Find Direct Current Alternating Current
Single Phase Two Phase Four Wire Three Phase
Horsepower \(\large{\frac{ V \; I \; \%\eta }{ 746 } }\) \(\large{\frac{ V \; I \; \%\eta \; PF }{ 746 } }\) \(\large{\frac{ V \; I \; \%\eta \; PF \; 2 }{ 746 } }\) \(\large{\frac{ V \; I \; \%\eta \; PF \; 1.73 }{ 746 } }\)
