Formal Science
Statistics is concerned with the systematic collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. Its primary purpose is to extract meaningful information from data and to support decision making under conditions of uncertainty. At its core, statistics provides methods for describing the characteristics of a dataset, such as central tendency and variability, and for drawing conclusions about a broader population based on a sample. These two major components are known as descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.
Statistics is widely applied across scientific, engineering, economic, medical, and social disciplines, where empirical data must be analyzed rigorously. Its methods are grounded in formal mathematical theory and have been developed and validated over centuries.
