Orbital Plane

Orbital plane is the imaginary two-dimensional geometric plane that contains the path of an orbiting object and the central body around which it moves.  Any object moving under the influence of gravity in a stable orbit travels along a trajectory that lies within a single plane, assuming only the gravitational interaction between the two bodies is considered.  This plane passes through the center of mass of the orbital system.  For example, the orbital plane of Earth is the plane containing Earth's elliptical path around the Sun, while the orbital plane of the Moon is the plane containing the Moon's orbit around Earth.
